What about the 99?

Recently Pastor Jenkins preached a sermon about the shepherd and his one hundred sheep (Matthew 18:10-14).  Jesus and His disciples were having a conversation concerning the disciples’ desire to know who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  Jesus spoke to His followers in parables of to express heavenly things in a way that would be understood.  In this parable, Jesus discussed the actions of a shepherd responding to the lost of one of his many sheep.  He stated that the shepherd will leave the ninety-nine to go after the one sheep that is missing from the flock.

The parable explains the love that God has for the one who belonged to Him walking away from Him.  He will leave those who are with Him to search everywhere to be reunited with the one sheep that strayed.  Once He finds the lost sheep, He rejoices due to the reunion!  This type of love is what the followers of Christ are expected to show when a lost soul returns to the God who returns to Him.  Celebrating the return of their beloved brother or sister.

As l listened to this sermon and understood the reason for the celebration, I questioned why the ninety- nine did not stray even when the shepherd left them to look for one.  Why did they not wander away without the shepherd there to keep them in line.  I thought about my walk with Christ and pondered why I didn’t walk away from God when I don’t always feel Him near.  As I studied the aptitude of sheep the reason we are compared made more sense!  My hope is as you read it will do the same for you.

The first discover led me to understand that sheep would rather be in a group than alone.  The group serves as a defense mechanism; by staying together they protect each other from an attack.  The group also acts as family, bonding the sheep together for life.  This behavior reminds me of how Christians relate to church.  I cannot lie when someone says they are from FBCG I get excited too.  I know we have something in common which makes it easier to engage in conversation.  The protection that comes from being a part of a group provides a sense of community that is lost when left alone.  And of course, there is scripture that comes to mind, Matthew 18:20.  When we collectively come together inviting God into our prayers, celebrations, or share our lives with others it has a positive effect on our lives.

Sheep also follow the guidance of the shepherd, which includes trusting He will lead them to the best place, even if where they are looks good.  They followed him without question.  Sheep learn early in life to follow older sheep.  The older sheep have learned that the shepherd is their leader and serve as examples to the younger sheep how to respond to the shepherd.  This right here got me!  It reminds me of the Deuteronomy 6:7 and Hebrews 5:12-14, these scriptures refer to those who have accepted and applied the Word of God to their live to actively train their children and others to do the same.  What I learn while following the shepherd is not just for me.  It is my job to mature to share my pitfalls, successes, and even my unsteady footing to help others along their way.

I don’t know about you, but I have found it hard to follow God without questioning His intentions.  I want to know why, when, and how things are going to work out.  I often get frustrated with His lack of sharing His well-made plans with me, leaving me in a state of either I follow, or I don’t.  Unlike the sheep, God has allowed me to practice free will when He provides direction.  Truthfully, there have been times that I have gotten it wrong and strayed away into sin.  Going back to what I felt was comfortable, instead of trusting Him.  Yet, just like the one who strayed away God chased me down until I was ready to follow His plan for me.

Today I consider myself a strong member of club ninety-nine!  Daily I am learning to trust God’s voice as He leads and guides me.  Knowing that His way is better than mine and even when it seems hard that He is maturing me in an area that is lacking in understanding.  Matthew 6:33, expresses how I live a life as one of the ninety-nine, seeking first His desires and not my own.  Are you a part of club ninety-nine?  If not, He is coming after you! Waiting to add you to the flock as we join in celebration of your decision.  Welcome to the family!
